The relation with the Governorate of Bethlehem and the Municipality of Beit Jala is dated April 28th, 1999, when the Twinning Agreement was signed with the Province of Reggio Emilia and the Pact of Friendship with the Municipality of Reggio Emilia was signed in 2005.
Today, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia is committed in several international cooperation interventions in the area, including the project AEPIC- Alliance for an Inclusive and qualitative early childhood education in West Bank– co-financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the Emilia Romagna Region, promoted at local level by Reggio Terzo Mondo and Reggio Children.
In order to face the critical situation of the early childhood services, this project aims to experiment new partnerships with different institutions and associations of West Bank, such as the Ministry of Education, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate, the Greek-Catholic one, the Unesco and – of course- the Municipality of Bethlehem. So far, only the half of children attends pre-schools, which are mostly supported by the private system.
On the occasion of the 2015 International Tricolour Games, two basketball teams, accompanied by Mayor Nicola Khamis and representatives from other institutions, participated in the 5th edition of the sporting event, strengthening the relations between the two realities.
